In 2017, the OHL launched a new element of the draft: The Under-18 Priority Selection.
On April 12, 2017, four days after the OHL had their traditional entry level draft, they had an Under 18 Priority Selection for major midget players. This consisted of a 4-round online draft. All 20 OHL teams got 4 rounds, 5 if a goaltender is selected. The 2017 draft was open to players born in 1999 and 2000.
The press release included the following statement from OHL vice-president, Ted Baker. “We felt it was a way to enhance the midget category to provide an opportunity for players who were otherwise not drafted to say, ‘Hey, there is still an opportunity here.'”
